Headphones and sound card

So my soundblaster 3d tactic rage headset finally broke. I was reading some threads about not buying gaming related headphones for this game. So i was thinking about buying the ath ad700x or the ad900x and getting a soundblaster z soundcard, do those sound like a good pairing? Any feedback would be appreciated

I like the Logitech G930 7.1 wireless. They give you a full 8 hrs of wireless gameplay and you can always plug them in and charge while playing. I prefer wireless so I can run to the kitchen or bathroom quickly without ripping my head off forgetting I have them on. Of course, you should pick up a headset that is comfortable to wear. The G930's fit "over" the ear so if a freight train crashes into your house while wearing them you will never hear it. My 13 yr old son has a pair also, so I like to sneak up and scare the heck out of him. o:)

If it's just for aapg, don't do it. Have been playing competitively with a 10€ headset for quite some time, later on switched to a Sennheiser PC363D. Never used a dedicated sound card and I still hear everything.

Embarrassingly I play with a pair of them bundled with a samsung phone.. earphones(plugs), that are plugged into the headphone output of my Z906's control center. Game does sound a little tinny if you compare it to a proper gaming headset  , but surprisingly.. they do the job well in terms of being able to hear the environ.

When I play the game through my actual speakers.. I find that there's way too much space between me and the sounds, which confuses the heck outta my brain when it's trying to establish what's it's hearing.. it's hard to explain, I can't get as immersed.

Last actual headset I owned were Creative Fatality HS-800 and I gotta say, me being on a tight budget the main reason for picking this particular headset up, they were decent, little on the bassy side, but they made games especially sound awesome.
If my trollery drives you crazy, you'd better put on your seatbelt.

I use a pair of Sen 598s with a xonar stx sound card. I feel having good sound goes a long way in separating you from everyone else.

Yep. Past posts from [Dev]Soundy (the guy in charge of the sound, go figure!) have echoed the sentiment; a soundcard just isn't necessary to play at a high level in games any longer.

Also 90% of "gaming" headsets are overpriced crap. Your best bang for your buck is to do some research and find you a quality pair of headphones and either buy/build a mod mic and or buy a desk/monitor mounted mic.

I have had a creative Fatality soundblaster for 10+ years now, but as soon as I switched to win7 from XP, there was a noticeable degrade in sound position, and levels. It really doesn't matter, there was an article posted about how windows got rid of pushing sound processing to hardware anymore.

I also have had a set of Medusa 5.1 headphones for the past 10 years, which used to do great in WinXP.... but aren't worth the hastle nowdays. Just get what ever is comfortable. In this game, the sound are pretty off half the time anyway.

The headphones will be great .. for the positional its more in the software, Ive been going back and forth between Razor and Realtek for tests, and although I like the overall sound of Realtek better, it cuts out. I have it set to 5.1 and during tests it works, but in game it cuts out the rear so I wouldnt hear someone behind me or a nade exploding behind me. So I went back to Razor although the sound is different but I can at least have better positioning.

So you mentioned soundblaster Z which will run your positional quite well paired with these headphones.. ya you'll have nothing to worry about, good setup.

I agree with a slight difference, in the case that you might want to buy really durable headphones (which might require an external amp, not just a consumer grade soundcard). I've spent enough money on cheap headphones which just break after a while (some, like the Koss ksc75 are pretty good for what they are, but they don't last much at all).

I see a lot of people telling you to your mb sound is just fine. I'm not going to debate them on that point. However, I'm surprised no one has asked you to ID your mb so to verify your audio hardware and drivers.

Regardless of his on board, he's not going to break the bank with a soundblaster Z and for sure it's better than any on board so I say go for it.

Like Doba, I am using the AD700x with the mod mic attachment. I have the SUPREMEFX IMPACT III for my audio. This is the best audio setup that I have had for gaming. The open back sound stage is incredible.

there is onboard audio out there better than a sound blaster z. I would get Soundblaster x g5 if it was me. It has same headphone amp as the more expensive zxr and sound blaster x7. It also has a newer SB-Axx1 multi-core processor instead of the Core3D the z/zx and zxr have. The x7 and xg5 use SB-Axx1. You can get xg5 for 149.99 some times on sale for less.

the main thing is the headphones the ad700x are not extremely watt hungry meaning they don't need a powerful amp a good headphone amp will definitely help them something doba may one day witness/realize but you should be fine with them and just on board and headphone amp later. One sure fire way to know if you need to get headphone amp is if you have sound at 100% and your headphones are not blowing up your ear drums.

Gigabyte and I believe MSI make boards that have dedicated onboard headphone amps and you can flip a switch from 1-2 for high gain and it makes a world of difference. But not every motherboard they make has this.

    #1 buy the headphones
    #2 burn the headphones in
#3 test them for a week or so or how ever long you want to. If volume is maxed out at 100% and it isn't quite loud enough seek buying sound blasterX g5. Also make sure to test Razer surround program.

Really only 3 options from creative now to consider I wouldn't get a sound blaster Z unless its 50$ given the sound blasterx g5 is out now its the best bang for the buck its an external usb sound card. The sound blaster zxr is more expensive and supplies same headphone amp but with older version of cpu. The creative X7 is an external sound card and is creative's top of the line it goes for 400$US it also has same headphone amp as g5. Therefore IMO SBX g5 is the best deal out there don't settle for less. If you need to save up save up.
