What if some players are using Spectator to ghost?

I actually caught a guy doing this on our server one time. There was a player in spectate and a player that was playing really well. Just happened to know where everyone was at any given time. I spectated him for a while and it didn't look like he had any cheats running because he had recoil and was not following anyone behind walls. For a while, I just thought he was really good. Never kicked the guy due to no proof. So the next day while looking over the screenshots, I kept coming across screenshots of the full map within each map that was played. I noticed that the full map screenshots were always from the same guy in spectate. See below for an example. So I went on to investigate a little further.

I did a background check on the player in spectate. Come to find out, the spectate player had a shared IP address of the player that was playing really well. The spectate player had changed his name at least once or twice a day. Also, the spectate player's profile had very little points, like a noob would have after about a day of gameplay. So I check the steam profile and noticed that the public profile wasn't even created yet. Just numbers with nothing else. So I dug deeper. Went and checked the screenshots on some of the other servers he has been on. Sure enough, both the spectate player and the player that was doing really well were on each server at the same time. That was enough for me to add both of the players to the ban lists on my servers.

In the pic below, I did cross out the players name and GUID. Did not want to cross the line on the forum rules.

Yes exactly as I was explaining. Although I think some players can go further and use spectate to track players through walls. I suspect that some are using the spectator account to spectate them self play and using that monitor for game play. They would then disregard their own monitor and could just use the spectator account monitor for actual game play. This would give him ability to look through walls on servers that have the option to spectate through walls selected. I have raised this before.
Incident that I recently experienced there was no Admin online and it took me a while to provide proof to the other players on the server before they also challenged him and he left. anyhow server admins should seriously think of disabling this option!!! it is happening more and more often since this option was made available on full release and they will never get a VAC ban because punkbuster will never find him as cheating.

    So...the way I use sound...

Wouldn't that look like I was ghosting if you followed me in Spectate?

How do you plan to tell the difference to be sure of your accusations?

(PS...I agree about the spectator issue but....)

Accusations mostly comes for those who keep on playing really good in a constant manner...besides, using another account to achieve what was described above can be tracked down. Of course the real issue is mostly related to friends or teammates playing in the same server. This also comes down to the sensibility of the server admin and his/her ability to actually make the server a good place for everyone (e.g. like sometimes moving people from the same team on one side).

Of course there is no real solution against people who try to get an advantage by spectating the match in order for others to get an advantage.

Well, frankly...I do think the spectator coloured wall silhouettes are too easy to abuse...I mean...it's a free, built-in 'enhancement!' ...but I just wanted to balance the conversation with the sound issue. As I get better at playing, I'm getting more sensitive to the issues of false accusations! :s .....which sucks.

Good thing someone like you is experiencing it now. Really shows the face of the great community we have.

well if you have another account sitting in spectator using same ip then I would be suspicious. if that account had never fired a shot then I would problebly accuse you of using it to cheat. I not concerned with your average ghoster. one who has a dead team mate call out positions or has another clan member in TS. I am concerned with blatant cheating using a spectator account to view through walls

Yep, I agree with that. I don't want people to have unfair advantage.

We've had that topic before, it's exaggeration beyond any common sense. This is far from being an actual issue.

I'm not sure it's very easy to tell, IMO. I'd say some people do dishonorable things, and others get painted by the same brush. Who's who? ....unknown.

Generally true obviously but that specific kind of abuse is not really an issue. You'll have way more people paying for the same kind of assistance.

Best advice I can provide on that topic is to assume everyone is clean and keep it to oneself if someone seems fishy. That way one can not harm others with accusations. As a bonus people will not laugh at you when you provide solid proof with your claims. Still the biggest issue I see leading to false accusations is people lacking knowledge on that topic. It's easy to accuse but when being asked for reasons they usually can't explain.

    Agree. Tough topic. :s

I do think we should be vigilant....just not 'vigilante.'

As long as it's kept objective and there is actually effort put in it's all good. People just tend to jump to conclusions too quickly as it's convenient. Can't imagine what it would be like if we had that weird restriction stuff that bf3 had.

(I thought sidetone was about room balance so your headset doesn't seem like an earmuff to deaden sound and you can hear yourself talk....? This should NOT affect directionality!)

Raising the sidetone to max was mentioned a while ago to improve hearing (and those footsteps behind you). Most seem to agree??

How? It's taking signal from your computer room?!

I have my treble at +3, sidetone at max, and bass at O. Just try it out and see (hear) if you notice a difference. I know sound gets iffy as we get older. Whatever flavor you like, but the default levels (0 db) don't work for me.

Slide the Sidetone slider to adjust the loudness of your voice as heard in the headset. Sidetone helps you speak at more natural volumes and relieves a common 'plugged ears' sensation. Sidetone does not affect how others hear you. This field is not available for all headset models.

Sidetone adds noise from your microphone, like Keebler said. It makes no sense that it would make it easier to hear in-game sounds -- you're adding extra noises that would mask anything from in-game. This is more than likely just placebo effect. You changed a setting so you *want* to hear an improvement.

Free map see through roaming while in spectator mode should be disabled at least. That's a minor thing for that matter anyway.

Where do you find that, I would like to use that but don't see it in the game.ini files on the server..
One day I will graduate noob school!!!

He's talking about free camera in spectate at ALT+3. (I think....)

ALT+Z kills the HUD, everything but the "ghosts." There's a setting for those in Settings > Misc

F4 brings up the advanced spectator info

Probably should have started a separate thread with my sound tests, but I just wanted to revist this topic and add that I did a Z-axis sound test with Duke on an outdoor UMM and a stock building-based map.

I could not conclusively find support for the idea of Z-axis sound or the ability to follow it like I was able to closely follow the 2D sound stage. I mean there were 'hints' it was working, but I'm just not confident in it.

    So...

 ...I dunno. I'm going to make a sound test map specifically for this.
