Advanced Editor continues to crash

I'm trying to update a map that I built but every time I try to load it the editor crashes. I can open another map I've been working on, of which I have not used Build All yet, not sure if it makes a difference. If I load too many Assets into the Browser the editor crashes.

First off, can someone point me to which Asset I need for the stairs that are used as the West Stairs in Inner Hospital? I'd like to use those on my current map. They are wood slat type with metal frames.

Here is a copy of my AAEditor log file. I see that it says 'Ran out of virtual memory. To prevent this condition, you must free up more space on your primary hard disk." but I really don't understand why this started happening. I have tons of room on both HDD. I even changed the virtual memory on my secondary drive to 20,000 but it made no difference.

That's the goocher that's killin' the editor, is it a big map that your trying to load? for example.. containing a LOT of assets?

Thanks for the stairs. I don't believe I have that Asset available but I will look.

The map I'm trying to load is 35,592 kb. It doesn't have a LOT of assets IMO. I was able to load it every other time I've edited it up until the last build/save/upload which was right before the last AA update.

I've uninstalled steam, reinstalled, reinstalled AAPG but it still crashes upon loading any of my maps except the current one I've been working on.

The only other thing I can think of is that you could be using (forcing) 32bit editor?



To be sure your using the 64bit version.. Ensure the checkbox (circled red in pic) is 'not' ticked before clicking and launching either of the editor versions.

Other than that I've no solid idea's on why your having this trouble

My only guess would be a lack of sufficient video memory on your video card(s), as it's unlikely to be RAM or HDD related from reading your PC specs.. but if video card memory was the case, it would not be fixable without getting better hardware (ie a new video card with more video memory) but to be honest I'd hate to be somewhat responsible for anyone going out and buying something that didn't even fix the issue.

If all fails . You can delete all .upk files from your pc hd . Then verify your game cache through steam and it will download all new ones and try again . I have had to do this a few times now .

Thanks [ENG]Uni-Sol. I am running and always have run in 64 bit mode. I know my video cards are outdated and lack memory in today's standards but up until the last AA update the AE was working fine, with a few crashes here and there, nothing like this.

What do you mean? The only folders in the Save folder are folders named for my custom maps. Inside each of those folders are only the umap files and one folder has a metadata file in addition to the umap files. Some folders have more than one umap file because I have 2 or 3 versions of the same map, all with slightly different names. I've tried opening a map with a much smaller file size but it too crashes.

The last two days I've tried to Fully Load the ModKit_Commerical_Stairs01 Asset but every time I do, AE crashes.

I submitted a problem to AA tech and have been corresponding with someone that may be able to assist me. I'll post and update once it's fixed.

These guys strike up a very good point.. Go to

C:\Users\Games\Documents\My Games\America's Army Proving Grounds\AAGame\Unpublished\CookedPC\Assets

(or wherever your Documents folder is on your PC)

and once there, if there are any files in that Assets folder (that are not something you have saved there yourself), remove/delete them, then after, try reloading your editor/maps.

The editor don't take very kindly to any stock game assets being edited and saved and sometimes this repetitive crashing thing happens after.. most of us have done it at some point by mistake, sometimes without even realizing we'd done anything wrong

Hopefully that's the problem your having.

I realized something in the last few days that could have contributed to this issue: I subscribed to every custom map that is listed in Steam/Workshop. After that is when the Advanced Editor started crashing. Since then I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Steam, saved important folders then copied them back over but the problem persists. Now, even though I have the folders and files, all other games are missing according to Steam so I'd have to download them again.

I removed the 2 files from the Assets folder that should not have been there. No change. I copied the Workshop/Content/folder contents to another location then deleted the contents of the first. For some reason when I copied the files over, the names of the individual files changed to some random set of numbers, waste of time. Once the files were deleted from the default location I started up Advanced Editor and it has worked somewhat okay since, although I can no longer open any maps that are filled with a ton of actors or assets. I can't Fully Load the ModKit_Commercial_Stairs01 assets, it crashes every time.

I can't finish my map or start a new one because the Assets, any of them, when trying to fully load causes AE to crash.

I haven't heard from AA tech support in over a week.

I'm still at a loss.

Once you have subscribed to workshop maps you have to unsubscribe from them or they will just re-install, whenever you manually remove them from their physical location. Since any subscriptions (or games etc) are tied to your steam account it wont matter that you completely removed steam, they will still download as soon as you log into your steam account, even on a clean install.






Sadly, I've never heard before that too many subscriptions can cause the issue your having. So here's to more hoping

I'm almost all out of ideas.. 1 more.. Have you tried deleting the various AAEditor.ini files? if not try that so that the editor can make a fresh copies of them when you next run it.

Make sure AA or the editor is not running, then go to..

Documents\My Games\America's Army Proving Grounds\AAGame\Config

You probably dont 'need' to delete some of those as they are more to do with your preference settings so that it remembers them each time you use it/close it, but better safe than sorry I say.. give it a thorough clean, if needs must its worth a try

As i see by the log files up there you are a great fan of UMM`s but sometimes this causes many problems. Every UMM causes a cooking process which will build a shadercache which will be stored in the Refshadercaches file.

You described a situation i had really often on my building pc.
sometimes this problem is caused by a corrupted shader cache.
If you load a map in editor the editor or only open the editor it will look up in this cache if there is a stored version of the maps shaders /shadows /lighting.
Is there anything corrupted (perhaps by some little misplaced byte or reference) the whole editor crashed or will hook up.

So if nothing works, try this:
GOTO %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\America's Army Proving Grounds\AAGame\Unpublished\CookedPC

there must be the localshadercaches.upk first copy it to another location
the editor will create a new one if it starts and doesnt find it.
Perhaps this will work. After this the editor will rebuild the shaders if you open a map once again


This workaround helped me certain times (on radiotower, wirecutter and airfield)

Thank you Modtools. You didn't technically mention it but I'm assuming you wanted me to copy the file to another location then delete it from its original location, so I did just that.

Still crashes.

I just realized a possibly important hardware issue. Months ago I took my PC to repair store. Told them to fix the crashing (of the PC) issue. They insisted that after hours upon hours of testing they could not repeat the issue but recommended I upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. I, thinking about my last PC purchase and the little to no problems having with it, told them to install Windows 10 64 bit. They said they did and ran some tests. Found out that Windows 10 doesn't like my video cards because the PhysX card is separate from the actual video cards. They told me to remove it so I did. Also to use only one video card because Win10 doesn't like more than 1. Ran Windows 10 for a while but continued to have some issues. Got fed up so I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit (yes I feel like it's an upgrade - use WIN 10 for a while and you'll see). The physx card is on my desk. Wondering if putting it back, now that I have WIN 7, would make the issue stop.

I've noticed for the past few weeks that my FPS while playing jumps sometimes from 90 to 10 or even 5, causing major video lag. My cards are currently running SLI and when I set them up that way after installing Win7 the FPS stayed about the same but the quality greatly improved. That worked fine for a few months but now I'm thinking reinstalling the physx card, which I will do tomorrow.

I know I need to just start over with a new PC but I can't afford it. Can't even afford to upgrade my video cards.

I'll try the physx card tomorrow and repost my results.
