Main menu options disappear when pressing ESC in-game

Hi Devs

After this update I encountered a strange issue. Same software/hardware as before the update.

If I press the ESC in the game while on a populated server, the main menu settings option disappear and screen goes darker. I lose the HUD and crosshair, like the menu is still activated, only I cannot see it.I can move and play the game but it is basically unplayable like that. After the round finishes I get Mission Success overlay stuck over the screen even when I start playing a new round.

Also note that when exploring the maps offline I have no such problem, the menu appears when pressing ESC and disappears after pressing it again. I tried verifying game cache, it failed on two files (old pb files, autoupdated them, issue of course is still there). I played around with my in-game screen resolution and details, no dice.

Edit:
To make it clear, once I press ESC in the game on a server (not explore mode), I cannot press it again. The screen goes darker as if I am in the menu but i can continue to play , only without HUD and with much darker screen.

I rolled back NVidia driver to previous version, issue remains.

I eventually went to config directory and just deleted everything from there. Re-run the game and it autogenerated new config files for the update. After this the issue is resolved. Looks like the old config files were not working well with the new patch. I only changed the bsmooth option in system settings before, dunno if that had anything to do with it. Everything else was @ default.
