Does any of this camo business actually have any real bearing on the play of the game? Surely camo is supposed to make you less visible to the enemy and in this game the enemy always sees you wearing a strange orange and black mottled outfit which stands out from the background like a reflective street sign. What is the purpose of picking a camo outfit if the only people who see it are your team mates? The whole camo scene seems to be just fancy dress party clothing.

The skin and camo stuff is just a fun side thing to do. The Devs need to make OpFor look different than the US soldiers for gameplay purposes. I would like it if there were slightly different OpFor skins based on the environment (woods, desert, urban, arctic), but I'm sure if that's even on the list of things to do, it's pretty low. I'd still prefer the old school style of guys dressed in all black or in non-soldier outfits, but the Devs decided to go with a theme that was more based on conventional warfare.
You joined the world's greatest army to become a graphic artist? Outstanding!

He's talking about weapon camos aka weapon skins.
