Do Opfor weapons do more damage? Does it make any sense to pick them up and use them?

Update:
According to the feedback in this post: It's always a good idea to pick up Opfor's gun when presented the opportunity.

If I remember well, the AK needs 1 bullet less to the torso to kill than the m4, but someone will come and give you more details about it

Yes and no. It really depends on which weapon you're discussing and the situation.

The AK105, for example, is higher damage than the M4 at close range but is a worse choice for engagements beyond about 18 meters. Part of this is due to its lower rate of fire.

The AK105's biggest advantage is when dealing with revived enemies. Players revive with 30 health points. At close range, the M4 does 29 damage with upper torso or arm hits, so it takes two shots to kill a revived opponent. The AK105 does 34 to the upper torso with a single hit up close.

The SuperNova shotgun does less damage than the 870MCS and I'd call it an all-around weaker weapon.

The SV98 and M24 have identical damage models, as do the M14 and Dragunov.

Weird, I always got the impression the AK105 had a higher rate of fire than the M4. I'm going to go test this to make sure I'm not imagining anything.

Who else gets the whole 'Matrix' feeling about this whole different gun thing?

The enemy are using AK's etc.. With their extra damage and different firing rate, right? so they hit you with them shots and different sounding firerate (from your perspective) and kill you, but from their own perspectives they are shooting you with an M4 with none of that extra damage or fire rate

Then, you've got the whole.. from their perspective your actually shooting them with an AK..

I mean.. What the heck is really happening?

Gets me all like this when I start to think deeply about it..

Can anyone provide a logical Spok-esque explanation for this whole phenomenon?

  • lol its probably coded to change damage models based on which side has it originally and then who picked it up afterwards. you are being shot at by an m4 that has a visual model to look like an ak, then you pick it up and it changes the damage model to either a 1 or a 0.

Yeah but when you pick it up, to them your shooting them with an M4, with none of the extra damage you think you have

    10 points for sherlock.

Maybe you should make a game since you are so inclined on how they work. I'm sure you could make a fortune.

In original games, the AK did more damage and had way more recoil. I don't think the trade off is too bad with AAPG where it does more damage up close, but worse from far away. It's actually a neat way of going about it.

  • I can agree to that. But does it actually have a lower damage effect at a greater distance or is it just a larger spread making it harder to hit someone? There is not a lot of situations where you need to shot long distance in most maps anyways.
ak's pattern spreads like butter in real life too

When you're sighted up there's no spread. So the only difference in the ability to hit the target would be increased recoil or sway.

Anyway, BCPull put together a chart on that other thread which shows the differences.

So long story short, it's always a good idea to pick up Opfor's gun when presented the opportunity.

Well the Opfor weapons do have a really nice feel, but the Opfor Snipers lack something to be desired!

Also it´s a good idea to pick up any weapon (except for maybe the m24) so that when you run out of ammo you switch to the other rifle instead of the pistol =)

Agreed, although it would be nice if I could switch to the rifle without switching to pistol if I roll my mouse wheel the wrong way.

I Really would like to see this implemented.

weapon selection would be nice if you could bind keys to the first 3 slots. I know we can bind primary and secondary, but call me clumsy, I still mess it up pretty regularly when trying to cycle between 3 weapons. I liked context menus as well from certain other games, the names of which I won't repeat again.
