America’s Army is pleased to announce the winner of our second YouTube video mission challenge is TheOnlySDF. Taking an ingenious approach to the mission challenge, TheOnlySDF presented his video as a mock news broadcast. In creating his video, he added an excellent narrative and plenty of in-game sound effects. We caught up with TheOnlySDF to ask a few questions about his winning America’s Army short film…
AA: How long have you been playing America’s Army?
TOSDF: I have been playing America’s Army since November of 2002, patch 1.4.0
AA: What do you like most about playing America’s Army?
TOSDF: America’s Army is a game that provides middle ground between absolute tactical simulation and normal “wannabe” realism shooters. When I first started playing America’s Army back in 2002, I discovered the dangers of running down the middle of a bridge, the joy of falling from a 350 ft. tower, and the feeling of achievement when I qualified as an expert marksmen. America’s Army provides gamers with an experience unavailable elsewhere, it allows players to get an inside peek at the Army and its life style. Therefore, what I like most about America’s Army is simply the way at which it plays. It is an experience like no other.
AA: Do you have a clan of players that you regularly play with?
TOSDF: I play with a group of interesting individuals that have become almost like family to me. I see most of them every day, The Black Sun Clan. The clan has been around since 1997, changing and evolving with the industry. We are strongly centralized on the concept of teamwork and its importance. If people are interested in joining, visit us at http://www.theblacksunclan.net
AA: What is your favorite AA mission and why?
TOSDF: My favorite mission was difficult to pick out. I love the classics; Bridge, Pipeline, MOUT, and SF Hospital, but honestly, I would have to say SF Water Treatment. Although it might not be the most popular of maps, it has a strong tactical element involving close, well-organized attacks. It is a map where teamwork is the deciding factor. “You live, you survive as a team”. In AA3 I enjoy Pipeline.
AA: How did you find out about the Mission Challenge?
TOSDF: I found a post on the official forums.
AA: What was your inspiration or strategy for the Mission Challenge?
TOSDF: Sound is something that is immersive. I have played many games where the lack of high quality sound manages to pull you out of the world. Although I would have preferred the ability to add my own footage to the challenge, I decided to give it a whirl anyways. When I began, the only priority of mine was to immerse the viewer into the situation, the world, the story. That was my drive.
AA: How much time did you need to invest in order to create your video?
TOSDF: A long time, maybe 14 hours? I deleted my project file unfortunately. The file was massive, holding 196 layers in the final render; a large majority of the layers were sound focused.
AA: Which video capture and editor application do you use?
TOSDF: I used Xfire to capture in game vocal calls, such as “Enemy down”, Windows Movie Maker to cut each of the original clips, provided by the America’s Army site. The majority of the sound editing, timing and animation was done in Adobe After Effects.
AA: Do you have any tips for other AA videographers?
TOSDF: Stick with your gut. Make sure that everything you do represents who you are, make your video represent you. Hooah….
Congratulations to TheOnlySDF on winning the second America’s Army YouTube video mission challenge. We hope to see more from you and other AA players as we release more mission challenges. Mission Challenge 3 will begin soon. Watch for it at www.youtube.com/americasarmy.
