Low FPS & Lag, but I meet requirements?

I am unable to play AA3, as well as COD4 and BF2 due to the fact that I'll join the game and have horrible lag and FPS.

I played AA2 and was having this issue as well but I changed to 'Direct3D' on the graphics device in-game and I play that smooth now. HL2, CS: Source, DOD: S all run fine as well, but AA3 runs horrible.

The sad part is -- I meet the recommended requirements, unless I'm mistaken? Also, I ran NZone's 'CAN I RUN IT?' and it passed me in recommended settings for COD4/BF2/AA2. I'm guessing it'd do the same for AA3.

Here's my DXDiag -- immediate assistance would be mucho appreciated.

8400GS is a very low end graphics card. Upgrade the graphics card to something like the ATI Radeon 4850, which can be had for very very cheap if you buy online. CS:S, HL2, and DOD:S are games running on the Source engine from back in 2004 ... that's over 5 years old now and is not a good indicator of whether you can run games on newer engines like Unreal Engine 3 (which is what AA3, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, etc. use).

Your graphics card is definitely the thing holding you back and is a must upgrade if you want to play, however, AA3 is rather CPU intensive, so don't expect super high FPS even with a better graphics card. Your X2 4800 is good enough, but if you really want higher FPS, upgrade the CPU along with the graphics card. I see you have a Gateway, so do research first if your BIOS will let you swap CPUs. The GPU is plug and play, just don't forget to properly install drivers.

I'm not sure how to "research" to see if my BIOS will allow a CPU.

That will work, any NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards you recommend or should I stick with a ATI one for my PCI 1.0 x16?

Also, I'd probably buy all together, so if you could point me in a direction for a CPU or whatnot, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to get this thing right.

I appreciate the reply!

After looking up Gateway GT5228 stats, you don't really have much choice in upgradeing the CPU, you could update the model to a 5000 type, but the difference between what you have now and the 5000+ is minimum.

The main thing you can upgrade is the Graphic Card, but there is a limit to what you can upgrade that too, because you are restricted by the Power Supply Unit that your Gateway GT5288 has and it seems to be only 300w, you could have 400w, there is two ways you could find out what it is, one is taking the side panel off the computer and having a look and checking it, while you there, you need to check if the cables it has has a 6pin which can be used to collect to a GPU.

If the PSU is only 300watts, you going to need to upgrade that to support any GPU upgrade.

OK, lets suggest you upgrade the PSU, put a 500, 550 or 600 watts PSU in there and any of these will meet the power requirements for the new GPU.

So you got your new PSU, what GPU to get, I would suggest something like a 8800GT 1 GB GPU or a 9800 GT 1GB models.

There are also the 250 models, the 250's are just rebranded 9800's but tweaked a little. If you want something that is more powerful, than a 260 will do, anything higher than the CPU is a real bottleneck.

If you choose ATi, then something like a 4850, 4870 or the newer 4770's will do nicely, a 4890 would be the "top end" for your machine, but it be bottlenecked by the CPU.

Bottlenecking is when the resouces of the other computer hardware restrict or restain a other part of the computer, this means that if you place a really great GPU with a poor CPU, than the GPU will not run it's best, it still be great, but not as great if it had a good CPU, nothing to worry about too much, just something to keep in mind.

The last thing you could upgrade is add more RAM, your motherboard supports 4 slots for DDR2 memory, you already have 2GB, you could easy upgrade that to 4 GB for about 30 USD or something.

So I shouldn't upgrade my CPU, just deal with it?

I have a power supply I can replace it with, for sure. But what I be fine if I upgrade to the 260 as mentioned? I don't want to upgrade my GPU and still have a low FPS. Basically, will just upgrading my power supply to 500 and my GPU to a 260 or 9800 be able to handle on medium games like COD4/AA3 smoothly?

Thanks for the detailed reply! I appreciate it.

I would live with the CPU, if you want a faster CPU, than it's time for a new computer.

9800 should be able to max settings in COD4 and have good high FPS, for AA3 am not really sure, it play it fine but at what FPS or settings am not sure.

260 will play both and all games at high settings with good FPS, oh the 260 requires two 6pin connecters, so if you have a spare PSU, make sure it has that or make sure to get one that has them, if not, the 260 does have molex to 6pin adaptars.

Before you go buy anything, make sure you research the things you buying and what requirements they desire, just in case.

Well I can already tell you that I don't have a PCIe 2.0 x16, only a regular PCIe x16. Would I be able to get the latest 260 like that with the PCIe 1.0 x16?

Yes that is fine, PCIE 2.0 x16 cards have backward compatibility.

You're a champ, thank you so much for all your answers. I really appreciate it.

Take care. I'll let you know how the news goes.

Low FPS & Lag, but I meet requirements?
