You have to admit that the potential for abuse with this law is enormous. Regardless of your political affiliation would you want a President or SecDef with whom you disagree to have these powers in their bag of tricks?

I saw some extremely intelligent guy post this on another forum.Wink

Ok, the President can't call you an enemy combatant and make you disappear. But a tribunal set up by him can.
Quote:

?(1) UNLAWFUL ENEMY COMBATANT.?(A) The term ?unlawful
enemy combatant? means?
??(i) a person who has engaged in hostilities or who
has purposefully and materially supported hostilities
against the United States or its co-belligerents who is
not a lawful enemy combatant (including a person who
is part of the Taliban, al Qaeda, or associated forces);
or
??(ii) a person who, before, on, or after the date of
the enactment of the Military Commissions Act of 2006,
has been determined to be an unlawful enemy combatant
by a Combatant Status Review Tribunal or another competent
tribunal established under the authority of the
President
or the Secretary of Defense
.

Military Commissions Act of 2006
Now the question is, will this tribunal apply the standards in part i to determine if one is an Enemy Combatant.
But than if they fulfill the requirements in section i, than a tribunal does not have to declare them one.
I guess the tribunal is for those who don't quite fall within those standards. Shocked

It's part ii that makes anyone become a possible enemy combatant.
Read it out loud, and you will see that it means everybody.

Do you mean... President Hillary? Shocked

I'd certainly hope she had "bigger fish" to worry about than just lil ole me. Besides, isn't this meant for use during times of "war"?

By the time Hillary got in office, her lib buddies will have Iraq abandoned and breeding terrorists for at least a year.

I was doing a search for this Enemy Combatant thing a few weeks ago, and stumble across this.
President Clinton Jails 938,000 Illegal Enemy Combatants

First, look at the date, Feb. 2, 2009. Yes, a futuristic writing.
But now, I see no reason how/why this can not happen.

So this is directed toword Republicans, one day you will be out of power.
And subject to the laws you/your party, passed. Neutral

While the names and crimes of the detainees are classified to protect the interests of national security, a clue as to some of their identities could be gleaned by means of a stroll though major government offices around the country. Four of the nine Supreme Court Justices, for example, failed to show up for work, as did approximately 220 congressmen, 52 senators and a number of governors and presiding justices of district and appellate courts. The vast majority of absentees, coincidentally, were Republicans, in particular those congressional Republicans who had voted for the impeachment of former president Bill Clinton.

Additionally, the silence at certain major media outlets including Fox News, radio commentators on the Clear Channel network, the Washington Times, The New York Post, the Weekly Standard, the Wall Street Journal editorial page, and other news and infoganda providers suggested a number of detainees may have been extracted from those ranks. A significant number of fundamentalist clergy apparently also disappointed their congregations with their unexpected absences.

LOL

Sounds just like her. Laughing

It sure beats collecting their FBI files and having them all audited by the IRS like she did last time. Wink

Sure it's supposed to be used in time of war, so take your pick; war on drugs, war on terror, war on online predators, war on Christmas, culture war, war on <etc.>

In the examples given, I still see nothing where they can arbitrarily invoke 'alien' status of US citizens, or revoke citizenship.

It's a non-issue. Spin makes it seem like a threat to the American way of life. Never mind the fact that a citizen would have to be arrested and tried for treason under habeas corpus, and then convicted, before any further charges of enemy combatant would be pursued. In which case I still don't care because our system hasn't changed.

Thats an assumption Vikingskull. For if you are arrested as an Alien, you have no means on proving you arent an Alien.

OMG! We're becoming Saddam's Iraq! Shocked

"They" (Bush and his elite guard) can now come in to our homes in the middle of the night, take us away and detain us indefinitely for no reason! And now they even have the right to torture us!

Whatever will we do?

Those orange jumpsuits make your butt look big too.

/Crazed lunacy and paranoia

P.S. Can we try this on Olberman 1st and have him report back to us?

You're so sure of your rights, you're willing to give them away?

That's interesting.
